2016 Carretto Dry Riesling
The 2016 Vintage was extremely hot with little rainfall and lots of sunshine. Crafted with the idea of minimalistic intervention, the aromatics on this Riesling showcase notes of lemon zest, green apple, candied pear and gooseberry, with subtle undertones of honey. The palate mirrors the nose, but with an additional profile of D’Anjou pear, pink grapefruit and candied citrus. Minerality, alongside acid helps structure this crisp wine. Balanced, with a focus on fresh acid and a clean palate, drink now to enjoy fruit-forwardness, or age to reveal a complex and textured profile.
Salty foods like smoked salmon or a simple cheese and bean burrito highlight this wine’s fruit and residual sugar, balancing the acid. Acidic foods like a citrus salad with fennel vinaigrette or citrus marinated chicken thighs achieve the same results as high salt foods, but with the benefit of highlighting subtle citrus notes in the Riesling.
